I didn't see any children at my showing.
there was a good amount of people, but i saw some adults and a group of teenagers. I found it kind of odd because this is a kids film.

I've seen it 3 times, all on Friday or Saturday before 6pm and the audience was 1/2 adult the first two times and 3/4 adult the last time. Heck, I was at a showing of Hamilton last month and the guy behind me was saying how awesome Moana was. lol
shareI have a feeling the kids are not pestering their parents to see this movie multiple times. Rather, the repeat audience is the LMM and Hamilton fans.
Checking the reactions to the Oscar nominations on Tumblr I saw more celebrating that LMM was now one step closer to "EGOT" status than of Moana itself being nominated.
The box office results seem to indicate that kids weren't crazy for this film and it didn't catch on. I've not seen one child anywhere with any kind of Moana merchandise.
shareYou do realize everyone here has Google to counter your lies, right? This isn't the pre-internet days when I'd have to take your word for it.

Yeah, kids don't like qualify animation, and that's a fact. If it don't have a ton of pop-culture refs, slapstick, and bodily function humor, they will not sit still for it. Most parents won't either.
shareFrozen, Toy Story 3, and Lion King had very little of any of those things. Zootopia had a little bit more, but not to the level of Dreamworks and Illumination, who pollute their films with that crap, but Disney and Pixar do not rely on it for hitting the all time BO records.
shareAnd those came out at a time when animation was still highly respected. Now, it seems like that unless its full with pop culture references, it will underperform.
It's like when disney films bombed from 2002-2009 because they didn't have fart jokes. The only one that didn't underperform was chicken little and that was pure garbage.
Then explain why Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Zootopia were all huge.

I said 2002-2009. The films released afterwards came out when animation was respected again. Then, secret life of pets just dragged animation downwards, cut off finding dorys legs heavily, and moana underperformed while sing, another illumination POS, overperformed.

"cut off finding dorys legs heavily" Yet I'm seeing Finding Dory in the Top 5 Grossing films of 2016 standing pretty at over a billion bucks, not The Secret Life of Pets.
Moana is not under-performing, either. Only in your rancid, inbred mind is it under-performing.

I saw the sing-a-long version today. I saw a few kids in the theatre. I HEARD a least one girl during the show. Yes, she was singing along.
