No gory violent parental death. Just a strong young girl, beautiful scenery and some awesome music.
I took 2 little boys. My 6 year old jumped up when it was done and hugged me. He said excitedly "This was the best movie ever!" Might have been a bit overrated by him. But he never took a restroom break and that was a first!
She's the daughter of a chief. I am genuinely curious why you think chief and monarch are the same. Please enlighten me... and no, that is not sarcasm.
Unfortunately, I would actually agree with Carrot on this one. As the daughter of a chief Moana could be considered a princess. In the traditional sense of the word a princess has to be the daughter of a King, but a Chief and a King essentially have the same roles in their societies as ruler and leader, so there's no real difference.
Where I disagree is where she was apparently lying to Maui, I don't think she was lying: she honestly didn't consider herself to be a princess, perhaps because she didn't have that as her official title. Perhaps she considered herself more as a 'chief in waiting' with a responsibility to her people, which is how she wanted Maui to see her, instead of seeing her as a silly little hopeless 'princess' who didn't know what she was doing.

They also wouldn't be speaking english. You can translate hawaiian rulers titles to kings or chiefs interchangeably. Nearly none of the Disney princesses would have the word princess in their language. But a translatable equivalents.

Moana would have no other civilizations to define being a princess, as they only know of their island. So she would literally have to be their only knowledge of what a princess could be. She is wearing a crown for god sake...lmao
I think Mufasa's death was pretty gory. Disney Princess is a brand, not a monarchy. She had a role of keeping her people fed. I'm assuming this was set in Hawaii. Last I checked we had no monarchy here. You can classify her how you want in your mind. She said in the movie "I am not a princess." I think the message was pretty clear and empowering.

Then you've never studied history. The United States overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii. No, Moana is not set in Hawaii. It's a generic Polynesian madeup island. However all of its influences were or are Kingdoms. The Kingdom of Hawaii. The Kingdom of Tahiti. The Kingdom of Somoa. The Maori Kingdom. The Kingdom of Tonga. The Kingdom of Rapi Nui. there's a huge list. but they're all either were or still are kingdoms
She said in the movie "I am not a princess."
and she was lying. Do you know what a lie is?
I think the message was pretty clear and empowering.
You mean DEpowering. Princess = MORE power.
Use your noodle. She's inheriting rule from her monarch parents. She's a princess.
She had a role of keeping her people fed.
yeah....that's called GOVERNING through inheritance LMAO

I am not really concerned with your theories and googled monarchies. You are a really smart boy if you can list all those islands in the South Pacific.
I don't view her as a princess. I'm going by her words and her role. Nothing really to deal with. It's a cartoon.
I view the setting as Hawaii based on the characters names.
It is subjective as it's not a documentary. I did research the film before I went to see it. You are acting like you are king of this board. You are not. The US did not overthrow the "kingdom" of Hawaii. The islands were liberated by the US. We are done son.
Incorrect. It's not subjective. Princess = Daughter of a Monarch. Moana is a princess.

Obviously you're lying as you think it's in Hawaii.

Are you nuts? They literally forced their Queen to hand over the country at gun/canonpoint in a coup. Then flooded the country with immigrants, causing 90% of their population to die with disease, making them the poor underclass minority in their own country with no sovereignty. Where their surviving traditions exist as entertainment for tourists. Highly ignorant comment.

The movie takes place in a fictional island heavily based on Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti (per the directors). Also, there was a Hawaiian monarchy. Why do you think Iolani Palace is the only royal residence on US soil?
Edited because you posted a message right as I was responding to you. I just wanted to add that I'm not sure how you're getting "Hawaiian" from the names. "Tui" is a bird found in NZ, "Moana", is used in Hawaiian, Samoan, and Te Reo, and Maui is found in many Polynesian myths. I have no idea about Tala and Sina, though. I know for sure the Hawaiian language does not use the letter "F", so there is no way "Te Fiti" sounds Hawaiian.
Iolani palace has not been used since 1893. It's a landmark not a residence. Hawaiian does have an "F" so you might want to check your facts. The director interviews I have seen did state it was based on Hawaiian culture as well as some of the others you listed. Dwayne Johnson had also referred to it as being Hawaiian and her not being a princess. Since he is Hawaiian I will believe his statements.
First of all ass wipe, Johnson was raised in HAWAII. He has talked about that in every interview. I don't really care what sperm and egg created him. You are raised in a state, you are that statue.
Hawaii was annexed. It was not taken by force. It was to protect them from Japan. After Pearl Harbor.
Not a Princess. If she was, every Native American tribe would have royalty. Hawaiian does have an "f".

LOL LMAO XDDD You have GOT to be a troll America stole and raped Hawaii long before WW2 The stealing at gunpoint was only a few decades after the USA forced open JAPAN lol........ You have got to have been trying to be funny.... this is too much

Hawaiians aren't Native American......😂 and there were plenty of Native American royalty. Obviously not anymore as most were conquered.

But Dwayne Johnson isn't Hawaiian. He's Samoan and black. And Hawaiian language does NOT use the word "F". Here is a blurb about the Hawaiian alphabet. Do you see a letter "F" in there?
Actually, Moana and her family are the only ones who wear any red in their village (red is color of royalty for these people, I believe). Monarchy or not, Moana is royalty.
"I am not a princess." I think the message was pretty clear and empowering.
I don't see how "not being a princess" (which Moana is) is empowering. So royalty can't be empowering? Last time I checked, royalty have the MOST power.

No they do not have power. The British royalty has no power. Magna Carte took care of that. What princess in this world is powerful? Diana? She was so powerful she couldn't even order the press to quit following her and she died over getting laid. Princess Charlotte? She orders her diapers to be changed? Webster actually defines a princess as a relative of a sovereign. A sovereign has total power. This is not an chief. He is over a small group. Envy the crown. These are your issues. Not mine.
It still contains a section in the movie where they break down the actual powers of the Queen. Which reveal her as the most powerful head of state if she chose to use her full power.
Disney Princess = a brand that includes Mulan, who is not a princess. It does not include Anna from Frozen, because Frozen is its own separate brand. She is still a princess, however. Moana saying that was a lie to Maui. A Feminist throw away line that is used as a punch line to be mocked by The Rock.
Princess = Daughter of a Monarch Moana's lie does not change that. Not being in the brand marketing does not change that, as Ana is not in it either and is a princess.
Glad kids are getting these types of films out of Disney again. Think were seeing a new Golden Age for Disney film musicals. Reminds me when I was a kid of seeing great films like Little Mermaid, Beauty and Beast, Aladdin, and Lion King.
Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.
