260,000,000 civilians killed by their governments

This is a brilliant but disturbing film. However to put the killings in perspective:

According to a study by the University of Hawaii (www.hawaii.edu) 260,000,000 people were killed by their own governments during the 20th century. That is six times the number of soldiers who were killed in all the wars of that century. Most were killed by totalitarian governments, mostly Communist:

Here is the breakdown in descending order:

Country Years Killed
China (PRC) 1900-87 76,702,000
USSR 1900-87 61,911,000
Colonialism 50,000,000 (no years listed)
Germany 1933-45 20,964,000
China (KMT) 1928-49 10,075,000

Japan 1936-45 5,964,000
China (Mao Soviet) 1923-48 3,468,000
Cambodia 1975-79 2,035,000
Turkey 1909-18 1,883,000
Vietnam 1945-87 1,670,000
Poland 1945-48 1,585,000
Pakistan 1958-87 1,503,000
Yugoslavia (Tito) 1944-87 1,072,000

North Korea 1943-87 1,633,000
Mexico 1900-20 1,417,000
Russia 1900-17 1,065,000

China (Warlords) 910,000
Turkey (Ataturk) 878,000
United Kingdom 1900-87 816,000
Portugal (Dictatorship) 1926-82 741,000

INDONESIA 1965-67 729,000

Other 1900-00 10,844,000

Lesser Murderers 1900-87 2,792,000

TOTAL 260,000,000

So while the killings in Indonesia were horrific and inexcusable, they are way down the list numerically.
