Disappeared

It’s weird how this movie and the momentum of James Franco’s career seem to have totally disappeared! I remember this movie being a big deal when it came out and it being the film that would essentially “coronate” James Franco as one of the great filmmakers of our time and lead to more Oscar-worthy films by him. However no one seems to talk about this movie anymore and we still haven’t gotten any major new film work by Franco since this film. When is he going to come out with something new of significance?

It's because it's a lousy, mediocre movie that had the potential to be so much more. The book from which it was based depicted an incredibly dark, toxic friendship that was way more than just the good-natured, buddy buddy relationship Tommy and Greg have in the movie. Tommy in the movie is essentially just a quirky nice guy until we get to the making of The Room, when in real-life, the guy was anything but. In real-life, Tommy was a manipulative, paranoid, psychologically abusive "friend" who became vengeful and jealous at Greg any time the latter managed to find any sort of success for himself. The movie essentially eschews all this to tell a sanitized version of the story that ultimately paints Tommy as a flawed hero rather than the strange, disturbed outcast he really is and in doing so, made for a mediocre, forgettable flick.

That's why no one talks about this movie anymore, because there's really not much worth to discuss.
