I heard an announcement from the CW network that they will be expanding their target audience past teens and towards adults. This show along with iZombie definitely seem to be different than the usual gossip girl and 90210 shows. I am really excited for this.
The CW has been slowly going on this direction for several years now. The 100 is nothing like their typical fare, for instance. iZombie is a good fit for their brand yet it's still a bit more fun for people who aren't into the "Gossip Girl" stuff... But I agree that this in particular looks like the biggest step for them so far, from the previews it looks like there's only one teenager in the cast.

They have been saying that for years, but quite frankly, a lot of their shows are supernatural or sci fi themed. Before that it was more teen target audience, but I feel that a lot of their shows still target those audiences because they do cast a lot of younger people. I mean, yeah, that can be their downfall, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing either. A lot of networks have shows with older actors and some more grown up shows.
The only show they have that isn't sci fi themed aside from the few odd n ends shows like Whose Line, that new Cedric Barber show, and America's Next Top Model, is Jane the Virgin and Reign. I couldn't get past one episode of Jane the Virgin, and although I love Reign, the ratings aren't anything spectacular, and they diverge from historical accuracy and still try to add certain supernatural elements to the show. There are times I wonder if they don't know how to do a show without that.
I really don't think that iZombie is anything out of the ordinary either. They're banking in on the whole zombie craze, but also on Veronica Mars. It sort of has the same premise what with solving a case, and is even written by the same person.
The Messengers isn't all that different from all their other shows. It has elements of Supernatural in it for sure, what with the angels an the apocalypse. However, I do like that there is a varied age range of people in this, but some of their other shows are like that too. It's not really bad that they pick younger people because it means they can remain in roles longer without aging too terribly, but it often does mean they have to focus around younger age groups, which can hurt them.
CW's biggest problem is that they sometimes don't always look at ratings and look at loyal fanbases. I'm not saying that it's necessarily a bad thing, but there are shows like Beauty and the Beast who didn't have nearly as good of ratings as other shows they aired like The Tomorrow People, but because it had a bigger fanbase and won Peoples' Choice Awards, they renewed it. It's the same thing with Smallville running for ten seasons when it wasn't nearly as good as when it started, or even Supernatural. They keep renewing it because of the fanbase and they claim the ratings are good, but the content isn't as good.
CW sticks with what's familiar, case in point with the fact they had Arrow, then Flash, and now are planning the other spin off with the Atom and other heroes. Why do they need three superheroes on one network? I know it's all the craze right now and they're not the only ones doing it, but three on one network will be a bit excessive if it gets picked up. They also still want another Supernatural spin off because the first one didn't pan out, but they want to bank on the original, and then they have the Originals from The Vampire Diaries, though I actually like that one more.
Either way, CW's problems don't just focus on their age groups, but on the fact they stick with what is familiar and often don't have shows outside of sci fi lately. Yes, they had shows like Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie, and a few others, but those have all ended now, and did fairly poor in ratings, but they kept them on for no real reason after awhile.
Yes, it's all true. But surprisingly, I consider their spin-offs better than the original shows.
And, they are desperate for a 'Supernatural' Spin-off because they want to end that show. The salaries & production costs must be pretty high, given it's 10 seasons in.
Reign was always listed as fantasy. It's their game of thrones. Of course it was going to have magic. In the past few years the major networks have been following the cws lead with shows like sleepy hollow, Gotham, Constantine.once upon a time.. Anything that doesn't match up with their line up they send to CBS and vise versa. Also, I can't tell your opinion. Do you like sci fi fantasy or do you dislike it? The examples you say they should have more of.. Well it seems like you don't like those shows. I know I don't. (This didn't appear beneath the particular post I was replying to.)
I like the 100 a lot. I also watch Arrow, The Flash, iZombie, and Beauty and the Beast on CW. I watched the pilot for The Messengers and wasn't impressed but I will give it at least another couple of episodes before I make a final decision.
