Is this a christian show?

If so I'm out.

reply

i don't think so - tho any show centered around "the apocalypse" is going to have some allusions to that stuff. also; good vs evil - but the same could be said for Lord of the Rings

having seen the first episode, this strikes me more like The Stand (stephen king) than Touched By An Angel (or whatever)

reply

It really does seem like it early on.

I'll keep going but if it gets too preachy, I'm also out.

I want a TV show. I don't want a bunch of writers and directors trying to convert me.

In ep. 2 a full blown preacher (the coma lady) was introduced unfortunately..

Yes it is. I'll rather watch Se7en again for the state of the world.

It's certainly related to the Abrahamic religions, but I didn't notice anything to specifically link it to Christianity. The mythos they have revealed thus far could just as easily be based in Judaism or Islam instead of Christianity.

reply

It is a show based in Christian mythology, it is NOT a "Christian" show. More conservative Christians will most likely end up having quite a lot of issues with it I would think. And the writers have said they are not approaching any of the characters as being "good" or "evil" but more shades of gray. Does that sound like a preachy Christian show to you? Ha.

It's based in Abrahamic mythology, not Christian mythology. I don't recall any mention of Christ or the holy trinity or any of the other things that set Christianity apart from other Abrahamic religions. Angels and the Apocalypse are common to a number of religions, not just Christianity.

reply

In ep. 2 it was made clear that the story draws 100% from the Christian Apocalypse, despite a fleeting mention to other religions, aka Christianity.

I have absolutely no problem viewing a drama that is has Christianity at the heart of it because that's firmly where Christianity belongs. In the realm of fiction. It gives ground for good mythological story-telling.It's only when they start putting shows like 'The bible' on tv that I'm repulsed by it.
For people today to think that the stuff in that book is accurate and acceptable to believe in, in-spite of proof to the contrary,is lunacy.

If a show is proselytizing that will make it unpalatable to me unless it is also telling an enjoyable story with engaging characters.

If it is merely using a religious mythos as its rule base than I can enjoy it on the same level I would a vampire show or any other sci-fi/horror genre. I've never understand what the recoil was about.

"Where did they all go?"
"Who's 'they?'"
"You know, 'them.'"
"Name three."

So much ignorance on this board...

If this show is a Christian show, then so is Supernatural.

reply

Well to be fair Supernatural really started going downhill once they introduced angels. When it was just an x-files type monster of the week show it was amazing.

I've been watching Supernatural since day 1 basically, kinda stopped following closely around season 7, just caught up to season 9 via Netflix (and rewatched the whole show)... I actually think season 3 is the best, but second best is season 4. I think they have kind of ruined the angels in the show now and they're no longer interesting, but I loved their involvement in season 4. And 5 although that season is a bit boring.
