Why didn't the shapeshifter...

When she was handcuffed to the iron bar, why didn't the shapeshifter change her body to that of a little girl and pull her little arm through the handcuff? Or shift into a person who was missing an arm? Or just shift the shape of her arm to make it thin enough to pull it out of the cuff? Instead she just tugs on the cuff over and over again and almost dies from the gas. Maybe her power has limits, but it was annoying to me that she didn't at least try some kind of shapeshift to escape.

Other than that, "Deus Ex Machina" was a good episode.

It was shown in an earlier episode (I think the last one, where she was introduced) that she doesn't actually shapeshift - she just creates the illusion that she is someone else. When she looks in the mirror, she sees the illusion, but when she looks at herself - she's still her. If that makes sense...

Ooooh good point. I didn't get the significance of the scene with her looking in the mirror but now that you point it out it makes sense! I too was wondering why she didn't turn into a little girl and thought maybe she needed a picture or something...but your explanation makes sense. Thanks! :-)

Okay, I'll buy that. Thanks.
