So, they failed and "god" bailed them out.

And I don't but the "sacrifice" thing.
These are people who had all the answers about the existence of "god" and afterlife etc.
It was an easy choice. Certainly not a "sacrifice".

I think the point was to prove that humanity was still worth saving.

I think the point was that mankind is a failed experiment and some father figure likes using his magnifying glass on us ants for his amusement.
