Great Show!!!

Not getting the mixed reviews... I thought the premiere was fantastic!! Surprisingly good acting from the lead, and Ben Daniels is just perfect in his role. I really love the gritty take on Ballet.. I've never been much interested in it myself, but I find this has a great balance of drama and dancing. I even like that they are showing the skill in stripping and pole dancing.. showing both sides to the dancing spectrum. It amazes me how much pain these people must endure to achieve greatness and complete elegance. Can't wait to catch the whole season next week!

Starz just came out of nowhere this fall with F&B and AshVSEvilDead... both fantastic shows that I look forward to seeing more of!

I agree, I thought it was a fantastic first episode. The only thing I disagree with is your take on Ben Daniels, I didn't really enjoy his portrayal, I thought everybody else was excellent, everyone seemed to be playing their roles absolutely straight, whereas Ben Daniels was chewing up scenery like he was a pantomime villain, he stood out like a sore thumb to me. But I guess it's a love it or hate it take on the part, just didn't work for me, the rest of the show more than made up for it though.
And if I had to make a prediction I'd say when her Brother finely tracks her down she will be saved by Checkov's homeless character.

reply

oh yeah for sure... her bro is messed upppppp!!! but yeah that homeless guy will def have a larger role later on. I can see him saving Claire

And yeah Ben is a little OTT hahaha but I love a good villain... and I can actually picture it being like that in ballet studios. Professional Ballet is no joke!!! :P

The homeless guy is Dewey Crowe from Justified. I agree he will definitely have a bigger role. I also enjoyed the pilot. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Dewey is in this? oh boy, now I want to see it even more. He added some much needed humor to Justifed (That Choo Choo guy in the last season to lol).

reply

Dewey was wonderful, but there was plenty of humor in Justified when he wasn't on screen. Raylan, Tim, and Boyd could all be very funny, not to mention quite a few of the guest actors. It was one of many great things about the show.

The reviews I've seen are awful. I think those who wrote them haven't actually seen the show and their writings are based on the fact that Starz have produced only those 8 episodes.

I love the fact that the question "What is the show really about?" can be answered in many ways. I saw only the 1st episode, but it made me think about "our civilisation", "woman's place in the world", "the price of our dreams" and "are they worth it..." Dehumanization, demeaning, oppression... All sorts of things, really.

In other words, not all reviews are trustworthy.

I'd like to add that I love the main actress-dancer. I wish her a great acting career after Flesh and Bone.

I wouldn't call it great but I liked it. I think the bad reviews are a matter of expectations, if people are expecting a more straight forward "ballet show" they will be disapointed. I found it to be an enjoyable soapy mix of Black Swan meets Show Girls.
