Why the war references ??

I don't really get why each episode has a title for a war reference?
Is it because being in a distinguished ballet company is like going to battle or something along those lines?
Can someone explain why? I think it was pretty dumb ,but that's just me.

THERES NO ROOM IN MY CIRCUS TENT FOR YOU !!!!

That's it exactly. One if the dancers in the opening credits also has "take no prisoners" tattooed on her foot.

Claire was at war with herself and the cards she got dealt with in life (her drunken, abusive father; the baby she carries for 9 months; her incestuous attraction to her brother). Her brother was on a literal battlefield while she fought symbolically back home.

And yes, fighting your way to the top in a ballet company comes into play as well. It doesnt just call for technical dancing skills but endurance and a strategic mind as well to maneuver around all the people competing against you.

I have to watch it all again to see how I feel about the vocab. They acted as theme markers for every episode. Were they needed?....hmmmm....
