Everyone going to Grayson's

SPOILER ALERT!!!

In the Thanksgiving episode, everyone "surprises" the head guy Mr. Grayson at his apartment. But my question is, do they do that every year? He was on his couch all mopey right before, is it because he was doing a "woe is me" act and waiting for people to arrive as usual or did he really think he was alone that night?

Some people had plans to take trains and planes to their families, I can't see how they would do this every year. Then at the party, after he asks where Claire is one of his colleagues says, "She's new. She doesn't know." This statement makes me think this is done every year.

Any ideas?

That confused me as well. He seemed surprised but then that line made me think differently.

I don't think this is done every year, but I do believe they thought they needed to do something to change his disposition. A holiday intervention. They needed to save their collective asses. Claire being a newcomer wouldn't necessarily be privy to why he was a royal pr*ck. Which I believe is because he lost his lover around this time of year.
