Hairpin scene
i don't get it, is that something people do? dig hairpins into their head?
shareafter practice, toni cavanna (trainer) said: this must hurt... so she mos def did that, so no one would notice her self harming again

Self harm tends to serve a purpose to the individual.
Claire appears to use self harm and pain to help her cope with certain situations. A stressful encounter with her brother, then Tony explaining the purpose of the ballet, which very much mirrors the journey Claire is making, brings her secret very close to the surface. She uses the pain from the hairpin to block out the emotional pain regarding her secret.
She's self harming. People sometimes do that. It's a way of asserting some level of control when you feel like you have none. At the very least you can control the harm you inflict on yourself.
