I've been through six or seven episodes and all we've got is a recycle of the temperemental genius lover of Rodrigo from season 1, negotiations that took 6 or 7 episodes to pan out and the orchestra hasn't even back together through most of the season.
Agree. Aside from the change in scenery (which I LOVED b/c Venice is just so pretty to look at), nothing much happens. I was riveted by S1 and S2 but found myself really bored with S3.
I've forgotten the characters and who is who. I have to go back and read the recaps from S1 and S2. One thing I like about streaming service is that you can see all eps in one sitting. Just go through them, like a long movie. But the flip side, you have to wait a helluva long time for them to film the next season. So, I'm at Ep 10 and then I have to wait almost a year for S4. Bummer!
Season 3 has jumped the shark, and I am crushed. Seasons 1 and 2 were sublime, with quirky, original characters and interesting, believable relationships. Now Hailey--who was really at the center of the show--is a minor character. She's been stripped of her nuance and is now the standard rom com Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Rodrigo has become a cartoon character--like a caricature of who he was in previous seasons. I agree that, Alessandra, the temperamental genius lover (bordering on psychotic) was a recycled idea. And it was done here without an ounce of authenticity. Maestro Thomas's reaction to hearing his piece conducted by Hailey was absurd. Emotionally, it just didn't track with his character as its been established or with his earlier conversations with Hailey about conducting. I could go on, but it's too depressing. I'll admit there have been a few sublime moments, but overall the writing is just atrocious.
Everything you've said is ridiculously exaggerated. Thomas's reaction was completely in character. He's an insecure perfectionist. There's also an element of narcissism at work; he wants his first piece to be grand and ambitious. As the piece is being performed he's coming to terms with producing something humble. The rest of your post I just disagree. The pacing of this season was different, not bad. And there was nothing wrong with the writing.
I've watched the whole series and I will say that it's been relatively true that Hailey always gets what she wants sexually and has no problems in that department. The real-life character she's based on had sex with a lot of powerful people too but the real struggle was getting anywhere in the world of classical music.
I don't think it's jumping the shark, i don't think the 3rd series was much of anything to begin with. Why did I care about anything in Venice through the first five or six epidoes. There was little to no immediacy. I think Jumping the Shark means more making wrong decisions, and the show made virtually no decisions. All that happened was Hailey tried conducting and finally slept with Rodrigo. Everything from the lock-out to Brad/Lizzie fizzling out to Cynthia to Thomas's new direction were all extremely anticlimactic
I have just loved this show. I have to agree that I am having a hard time keeping up enough interest to even finish the season. The parts with Bernadette Peters and Malcolm McDowell have been fun....but that's the extent of it, and those scenes are too far and between.
Season 3 was indeed uneventful and boring. It has lost any of the freshness and immediacy that were present in the first two seasons. The characters are almost all cliche and although I love Malcolm MacDowell, here is playing, well, just Malcolm MacDowell. Zzzzzzzzz.
I blew through the first 2 seasons within days, but it's taking me weeks to finish season 3. It's not awful and it's certainly watchable, but it's missing the magic of the first 2 seasons.
Totally agree. Season 3 stinks. Lacks focus on characterization. It's all over the place with nothing much going on. Let's face it, the opera singer is just not that interesting or compelling.
