Is this worth it?

Okay, I know we all hate when annoying people keep asksing this on some IMDb board, especially when they're asking it about your favourite series; "why don't you just bloody try and watch it, and make up your own mind?!"

Well, I tried. This sounded interesting, and last night I watched the first episode. The only trouble is, I'm more confused after this than I was to begin with. I found the first episode very muddled and I had an extremely hard time keeping up with who was who, and who was sleeping with who again and so on.

So, in your personal opinion, should I bother?

I was like you, really confused about most things really after the first episode. Who is who and what's their relations and basically what the hell is going on. I decided to give it a few more episodes thinking everything would get clearer after a couple of more episodes. So much is going to be set up and introduced in the first episode of a series that I generally think it is a good idea to give it a chance and watch some more.

That said, to me this series became a case of "I've started it so I'll bloody well finish it". So I did, mostly out of spite. I don't think anything became much clearer, and I didn't care about any of the characters nor the story, not curious at all what about what was happening. Just one big yawn. This is just my opinion. Watch a couple of more episodes before you make up your mind :)

Thanks for taking the time to answer my (probably) annoying question! :)

Yea, while I agree that the first episodes (or pilots) have the trouble of in fact being first episodes, there have been enough complicated shows with complicated mythology and/or a lot of characters that have still managed to push out an excellent pilot. The best two examples of this that come to mind are Twin Peaks and Lost; both had their own mythology, and both had a big cast right from the start.

What you said about this show (and some other random comments I've read elsewhere) makes it sound like the show actually gets worse instead of better, and really, isn't there enough TV like that out there? Wether or not its due to their wanting to appear "mysterious" or artsy, or just a proof of their incompetence, I don't really care.

It goes downhill quickly about halfway in the series so I'd advise people to avoid investing their time in this.

If it's so awful, then why does it have an imdb rating of 7.5?!

If the dissenters in this thread seem to have so much problem following a complicated plot, then back to Transformers or something else that doesn't tax the grey matter.

I enjoyed the series, and found it ambient, atmospheric and well acted, although it was sometimes a little tricky to follow and glacial in pace, and the ending seemed a little rushed.

It's not that complicated (spoilers may follow), it's just that there are two separate stories that have nothing to do with each. One is a cat and mouse detective story about a detective investigating the suspicious death of a man (but we already know who did it because this is the first scene in the series). The other is a Cronenbergian horror story about parasites that make people homicidal. I think much of the confusion comes from assuming there's a connection between these two things, and trying to reconcile them.

Having just finished the series, I have to say that the intertwining of the two plots was deliberate on the part of the writers: the purpose being to keep the audience guessing!

I did not find the ending satisfactory, and I see that there's a new season, which hopefully will...if not tie up loose ends...at least continue to develop them.

Perhaps because it was more of a beginning?

Roll on season two...
