Can someone explain why Liam (spoilers)...

<spoilers>

did not become wasp food? I mean he was infected, in a wasp-induced trance murdered the professor, and presumably barfed wasp stuff into the professor's guts. So why didn't he get consumed by wasps?

I suppose the "plot" reason is that a little kid getting devoured by parasitic wasps would be a huge downer, but I was wondering if anyone could give a good, pseudo-scientific reason why the wasps didn't start hatching in Liam?

reply

Hey, that's a good observation. I can't think of any reason within the story why it didn't happen to him...

Because its not how it works in the series.

Maybe hypothermia and then the hyberbaric chamber somehow stopped the parasite?

This is my take.

The person infected becomes ill and then homicidal. They disable their victim then cut them open to lay the eggs in the abdomen. The victims then become the host for the eggs which eventually turn into the wasps.

Liam was infected and laid the eggs in Dr. Stoddart. Liam was then treated for the unknown infection and eventually recovered, at least to some degree. He was never the host for the eggs to develop so he didn't have them in his system to develop. Stoddart's died and was then refrigerated so that, presumably, stopped the eggs from developing.

Shirley laid the eggs in her mother who survived the attack. The Doctor developed the eggs while in hospital which eventually hatched and developed into the wasps. Shirley died of a heart attack but if we follow the same hypothesis as Liam she might not have any eggs in her to develop.

Jason laid the eggs in Ronnie and then hid the body in the utility closet. Ronnie lived long enough for the eggs to develop. Jason then continued to show signs of the initial infection until he killed himself. So, like Shirley, we never saw the untreated infection go further.

Elena never had time to lay the eggs in Carrie. Since they now know how the infection works they presumably treat Elena to kill the eggs.

So in effect the person that is infected with the virus is just the "creator" of the eggs and the victims are the hosts.

reply

Well, it used to be that kids would not be violently murdered on TV either, but the last episode sure broke down that stricture!

reply

Maybe because he received treatment for frostbite at the research centre. Perhaps that killed them.

reply

Yup. Previous poster mentioned that already.

reply

Tobey has it right, Liam, Shirley and Jason were carriers and their victims were the hosts. Stoddart was in cold storage which prevented any larvae from hatching (just as being frozen for thousands of years did). It will be interesting to see the long term effects of the only carrier still alive, Liam.
