He drove out onto the glacier in his 4-wheeler, got stuck in the snow, then walked some distance without his rifle. Forget about crazy old men with pistols. What about the three thousand hungry bears wandering around? That made no sense to me.

Polar bears are coastal animals, they feed primarily on seal, and there are no seals inland. It's highly unlikely one would wonder that far inland, especially as there are even no people it could feed on when there are no seals about. From pb's point of view, that's the last place he'd want to be at.
Then Dan comes swooping down in a helicopter, says he's going to rescue Morton, then obeys Morton's wish to just sit there, even though the man was obviously delirious and bleeding out. (By the way, you can't just hop in a chopper and drive it like a car. Takes years of training. Was there a pilot sitting in the cabin, watching Dan watch Morton die?)
We've already seen Dan fly chopper too. When he and the pretty one accosted Max and Yuri about riffles inland. So he didn't just hop on a chopper to save Morton, it's in his job description to know how to operate the thing. They don't have crime there so cops are basically search and rescue guys, of course they would know how to fly the chopper.
Funny thing tho, bot of these answers were provided in same scene in episode one. Someone's not careful watcher.

Enjoy the re-watch. It was a good show, though I don't understand what a season 2 would be about.
