Just watched the show...pretty good
Lately, I've developed a bit of an addiction for two things - Scadinavian noir and 'Broadchurch'-type stories exploring a crime committed in a single town. 'Fortitude' fulfilled both of these, and seemed somewhat similar to the Icelandic drama 'Trapped' which I simply adored...so I decided to give it a try.
On the whole I'd say 'Fortitude' is a great effort. It comes up short against others in both the aforementioned genres. But I think it does a great job establishing the 'world' of the show, the characters within the setting and their complex set of inter-relationships and a truly intriguing, somewhat unique plot.
Well...the plot is the one area where I'm a bit iffy. What really happened to Billy Pettigrew is an intriguing enough mystery, but the resolution to the Charlie Stoddard murder was a tad disappointing. And I can't say I was 100% on board the somewhat sci-fi turn the story takes eventually, especially in the last few episodes though its no doubt an interesting experiment.
Dan Andersonn IMO is truly the star of the show in every sense. A truly morally ambiguous character who nonetheless has a deep sense of honour...more so than perhaps any character on the show, barring DCI Morton of course (whom Stanely Tucci plays as a pretty straightforward by-the-book Brit cop parachuted into this Scandi noir world).
I'm definitely looking forward to more from 'Fortitude'...though I sincerely hope they lay off the sci-fi this time.
