Yes, in terms of expectations it is one of Zemeckis's biggest flops. People expected way better results. Which is all unfortunate, because personally I like Zemeckis and I liked the movie a lot. But no, there's no way to sugarcoat it: it is a serious box office flop.
They need to cover not only the budget, but the marketing as well. The budget was $35-$40 million, and they spent around $20 million on advertising.
In terms of money, studios usually take only 30% from foreign markets and at this point the numbers for The Walk are bad. Really bad for a PG movie in 3D/IMAX, with a popular young actor and a popular director.
And unfortunately it's not gonna get any better. Hopefully the movie will be more successful on home video.
