withdrawing £5k from another's bank account ?

Impossible today without being made a signatory!

Did it specifically say she wasn't, I can't remember - but she did say she had been dealing with his money for a while, so maybe he'd allowed her access to his account.

She was asked if she had power of attorney, or the equivalent, and she said no.

You don't need to have power of attorney to be an authorized signer on an account.

How does that work though, the bank only allows you to take out £100 a day, or is it nothing to do with the bank.

In the UK, a bank (from my experience) will allow the authorized signatory of an account to withdraw cash from it, so long as there are sufficient funds in that account. It has been a dubious pleasure of mine to withdraw £2K from a bank account in the past.
