Question about Maggie's apartment

I guess I missed something. When John and Maggie first go to Maggie's apartment, John looks around admiringly and asks her about all the books. Maggie replies, "Most of them are his." I didn't understood whom she was referring to but figured it would soon be clarified. No such luck. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I think she mentioned something about it being sublet?

Correct, she tells John she's subletting the place from a poet.
