what was the point


i didnt get the point of this film. or maybe there is no such thing. life is messy, love is messy. wow, great story.

Hawke makes a point early in the film about a whimsical theory that unborn children are spirits that work to make people come together so they can be born. So it's not so much that love and life are messy (though they are) so much as it's the fact that those things are so much less in our control than we think. Thus the irony of the film's title. Thus Maggie's declaration at the end that she's going to stop trying to control everything. And then of course the pickle guy shows up (the real father of her child) as if to affirm her decision. Life, in other words, is going to take its own course.

That's the point of the film as I see it, anyway.
