Why are some people calling it a rip-off of Zootopia?

Stories with anthropomorphic animals goes back to the earliest days of storytelling, predating animation, cartoons, and even printed literature.

Plus, it takes a pretty long time to produce an animated feature, a lot more than nine months.

People who are calling it a rip off are ignorant. I can see the similarities, but I know it isn't a rip off.

I agree with number - it's ignorance. I see the most inane posts on IMDB with each new movie, "Oh, this is just like [another movie] because they're both about people!". Yep, pretty much sums it up!

It's just that Zootopia is a really popular movie this year and it's the movie "to beat". I agree with you though. Sing and Zootopia may have their similarities, but it's nowhere near a rip-off. If that's the case, then we should call Zootopia a rip-off of every cartoon that uses anthropomorphic animals.

reply

It's not a straight rip-off like the Asylum movies.

It's a rip-off in the sense that it was probably designed to compete with Zootopia. I don't have any examples right now but there have been a few times in the past years where 2 very similar movies are released in the same year.

I do not think any Zootopia fans have to worry about this movie. But your right it is not a rip off and humanized animals have been used in stories etc for many years.

"Transmorphers" is a rip-off.

This is a movie that has more in common with "Cats Don't Dance" than "Zootopia"... though you could argue that "Zootopia" has much in common with both thematically.
