Trailers

Saw the movie, thought it was decent, but did anyone else notice how the trailers gave away almost everything. It's known that trailers can give away too much, but for this movie you can get the entire movie from watching the trailers, especially that one with Sing for the Moment playing in the background. The only thing not shown is the money thing.

Did the movie have such little to work with, they couldn't make trailers without explaining the whole story?

While it's true that the trailers showed quite a bit, they also highlighted the biggest appeal for seeing the film--seeing cute animals singing well-known songs in clever ways. I don't think audiences were going in expecting to see a complex story although there was probably some curiosity about who was going to win the competition. In a year that gave people a lot to think about, the timing was right for a light-hearted film that gave audiences a reason to feel good as they left the theater.
