Reese Witherspoon's singing.

Did anyone else think she was the weakest singer of the cast? I didn't feel like she had any pitch, which is why she sounded so obviously auto-tuned, which didn't help matters but that she also didn't know how to phrase her melodies. Her cover of Shake It Off really showed off her limitations as a singer. Maybe she would sound better with another song but even I don't know about that. After all, not every actor should be a singer (Johnny Depp is the golden boy for this) and Witherspoon was clearly out of her element here for me. I feel like even the filmmakers knew that, which is why they gave her character a singing partner in Nick Kroll to make it less noticeable.

"Shake It Off" and every other song Taylor Swift sings shows her limitations as a singer, so...

reply

Sure, but also Firework (Katy Perry makes crap music but she has a quarter-decent vocal range) and Venus. I just don't think Witherspoon has the talent. Even in Walk The Line, she played someone who wasn't much of a singer, either.

It is weird to see Reese in a film that involves her character singing since she has no training in singing herself. I thought she did pretty good even if I did think it was odd since I never saw her sing before.

reply

Overall I enjoyed Sing. Whenever there is a musical film there are bound to be some songs that are performed better than others. I thought Reese Witherspoon did well enough here, and in no way did she ruin the film for me. Plus Buster wanted to include groups in the competition which was the reason he paired up Rosita and Gunter. I would like to think this was a genuine part of the story from the beginning and not because Reese was supposedly so terrible.

reply

McConaughey's character called her "boring", so that's why he partnered her up with Nick Kroll's character.

Buster may have called her that, but he saw enough potential in Rosita to suggest the partnership. That would be the more positive way to look at it, and that was the way Rosita accepted it.

reply

If she accepted it, then it doesn't make her that much of a character, does it? She's basically a mother to everyone during the film and the only conflict she has is that she can't dance, which she works out during the middle. Face it, she's a very 1D character.

Rosita's conflict was that she had a scheduling issue and a family that took her for granted. Like some of the other competitors she also needed to find the confidence that would enable her to become a better performer. In an ensemble movie like this with different personalities there is bound to be someone like Rosita who has a caring attitude. Nothing wrong with that. In movies sometimes a personality like that is needed to encourage the growing friendships within the group. It's okay if you are not a fan of Rosita or Witherspoon's singing voice. In my opinion she doesn't ruin the film.

reply

I don't think it's fair to blame the family. The father has 26 people he loves and cares for. Why else would he work for these long hours? Witherspoon seems to be a stay-at-home mother, too. To the film's credit, they don't make him to be a bad guy, but I feel some might interpreted this the wrong way.

I agree that Norman is not the bad guy here. The family is in involved in a daily routine where it is assumed that Rosita takes care of the household, and the family only sees her as a wife and mother. So in a way she was being being taken for granted even if the family members are not jerks. Rosita was struggling and looking for a way to express herself when she came upon the contest. Even if she doesn't pursue a singing career I would like to think the experience perhaps opened her eyes to ways she could combine the home and new activities she might be interested in.

I'm curious. Why do you only refer to the characters in the film by the actors who portray them rather than their names?

Mostly because I find the characters to be forgettable that even their names are lost to me. Sure I could look up here but I also want to make a point in how the actors don't really become the characters. Matthew McConaughey and Scarlett Johansson don't do much to disguise their voices and it's distracting. Same problem with Secret Life Of Pets. I can't recall Kevin Hart's character, other than it's just Kevin Hart as a bunny. The exception is Nick Kroll, who really is a talented voice talent, given he sounds different in here than as Douche in Sausage Party, entirely different character, too.

Yes, she was the weakest singer of the cast, but her singing was fine.

When Jennifer Hudson closed out the movie all of them became weak. Even the gorilla was flat during "I'm Still Standing". Funny 98% of the cast was white. A lost opportunity for a cartoon featuring animals. Just shows, the producers didn't cast the most qualified talent but cast along Hollywood's tired status quo.

reply

Jennifer Hudson just screams.

reply

I don't know. I thought her rendition of Firework was about as good as Katy Perry's.

reply

I can't judge that one entirely since she didn't sing the entire song but from what I've heard, Katy's still better. Say what you will about her, Katy does have more vocal range than Reese, which is obvious as one of them is a singer.

She was undoubtedly the weakest but, hey, every musical needs its own Russell Crowe.

reply

If she was the weakest then ScarJo was just as weak.

That's BS. Scarlett Johansson did a great job, especially with that song at the end.. Unlike Witherspoon, Johansson is actually a singer and has released albums.

What a grip! That's from counting money.

Have you seen Walk the line . She has a great singing voice . If you dont like it , thats your problem.

She played a singer who wasn't known to be a great singer; That's why she was more of an entertainer.

Still her version of Wildwood Flower was great .

Maybe she's better at country but she sang pop for this and it didn't work.
