It's an overused cliche in trailers, it denotes when you think something is going a certain way and then it abruptly halts or does a total 180

Agreed- I'm asking "Why the hell would they do that?".

Like, do they want people to watch it, or just assume that it's the same old hackneyed junk that everyone else makes?

The rest of the trailer looks like the show could be solid. That choice was just shockingly bad.
