Why choose hearltess women?

Why did David chose the heartless women, surely he could of tried for any of the others without having to change himself/hide emotions to convince her he was a psychotic as her?
Even the biscuit lady was offering herself sexually and emotionally and im sure w choosing her over living that kind of lie would of been the better choice.

Im not sure why he thought she would be the one to spend entire life with.

Maybe he liked women who came across as confident and independent, rather than the meek, clingy types. And he liked women with short hair.

Also, it could be argued that he merely chose one of the women in order to buy more time for himself to find his Perfect Matching Dreamgirl. So he may have counted on having to break the chosen woman's heart in the long run, and therefore he may have considered Heartless Woman the best option to use for his purpose (because she may either not feel broken-hearted in case David leaves her for another girl, or due to her ruthlessness she deserves to have her heart broken anyway). Furthermore, he doesn't have to pretend to have feelings for her (which he doesn't have).

He choose the Heartless Woman unlike the biscuit lady because he was attracted to her. He mentioned liking short hair. He also had a game plan he thought would work. I think he was genuinely annoyed by the biscuit lady. I think he would rather live a lie with a terrible person that he'd enjoy having sex with than be with the annoying biscuit lady. I agree he should have tried harder with the other girls.

he said flat out that it was harder to pretend to HAVE feelings when you don't than to pretend to NOT HAVE feelings when you do. therefore the heartless woman was the easier one to feign a match with.

reply

Exactly. I'm not sure how people miss the explanation when it's actually stated in the movie.

reply

That doesn't necessarily mean that he had feelings for Heartless Woman though. And furthermore, one could still question why he would base his decision on just one aspect (namely, the aspect of how easy it would be to feign a match) rather than also letting other considerations weigh into his decision.

For example, solving a math problem such as Fermat's Theorem is also harder than, say, having your legs cut off, but if you were faced with the dilemma to choose between the two, which one would you choose? Wouldn't you have a try at solving the math problem first?

He did NOT have feelings for her. Throughout the movie there is an emphasis on couples being considered a match by having some defining characteristic in common, and we see multiple characters faking such a trait in order to match up and avoid being transformed.

To use your own example, he tried to fake being a heartless man (solve the math problem) to avoid turning into a lobster (physical mutilation). He thought it would be an easier trait to fake, but she killed his brother and he couldn't hold back having emotions about it.

Yes, I know he didn't have feelings* for Heartless Woman. Yes, I know he thought that feigning a match with Heartless Woman (by cutting off his emotional side) would be easier than feigning a match with another girl (by cultivating a not-yet-existing affection). Yes, I have seen the movie and I know where his decision eventually led to.

The question though remains why he chose the "easy" option over the more challenging option. You're dodging that question by ignoring/re-interpreting/mis-appropriating my "math/amputation"-example. Your first post tried to make it seem as if "David said that X is harder than Y" is the clear and conclusive end-all-be-all explanation to the OP's question.

[*] David indeed stated that it would be easier to pretend to not have feelings that you do have, rather than to pretend to have feelings you don't have. Judging from other threads on this board, it seemed that some viewers interpreted that statement as David having feelings for Heartless Woman but choosing to pretend to not have feelings for her in order to secure a match with her (which, according to his statement, would be easier than feigning to have feelings for a woman he didn't have feelings for at all). I thought you might be one of those viewers, hence why I felt the need to emphasize that his statement doesn't necessarily imply that he had feelings for her.
