Was the donkey actually shot irl?
they actually killed a donkey?

That would never be allowed
shareWhy do you say that? Hundreds of thousands of animals are killed every single day, and it seems like you're not aware of it.
shareYes there are but there are laws around killing animals in the movies.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
There may be laws, but I don't think you've seen Bad Boy Bubby. In it, there was a cat they "put down", for a scene in the movie. A vet was called in, and they euthasnazed it, and used it in a further scene, wrapped in clear wrap. Maybe the laws were different then.

Great minds think alike. Greater minds think independently.
I believe the laws in the US have changed and now you can't even kill a fly, and I think that's exactly as it should be.
shareI worked in TV in Australia for a while in the '90's. One of the guys I worked with had started out on 'Skippy', the bush kangaroo... A show in the '70's...and there was one scene where a car drove up to Skippy on the road. The actual kangaroo used in filming kept hopping away when the car got close, so THEY STAPLED ITS FEET TO THE ROAD.
Hell yeah.. Aussies don't give a *beep*
It's too cerebral! We're trying to make a movie here, not a film!
You didn't live in Oz long enough to know when you were having the pi$$ taken I suspect. In the old Skippy show they used stuffed animal parts a lot. That's not from someone who told someone who told me. That's just something you can see with your own eyes.
Watch out for drop bears if you ever come back.
Someone who told someone who told me? No - direct from source and not the first time I heard a few horror stories from good old Skippy. In Oz 11 years. And well aware of drop bears, cheers.

I think the kill was real. I watched the credits, there was no "no animals were harmed or killed" there. Nope.
It's certainly cheaper to buy a donkey than to animate that.. Another donkey or pony approaches the dead/dying one, so it couldn't have been just pixels, unless both were, but no I don't think so. It is getting harder to tell if humans or animals are animated, but you can still tell.
I always worry about these things, too. Maybe this will make you feel better. The donkey was not killed.
It was anesthesised for the scene.

I see no reason not to shoot it with a tranquilizer.
there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above her shoulder
I don't think they would have been allowed to do that, on film like that. I know that animals are killed in slaughterhouses and stuff, but most people don't see that, and it isn't filmed as evidence.

if you look closely you can see it can barely stand before she starts shooting and that it starts to fall before she fires the first shot.
shareI've seen animals shot and dying, this donkey was shot and died. If you pay attention you see that a front leg has been tied down, look at the manner of how it tries to move back. It nearly fell prior to being shot because of this. This is not an American film with American rules.
shareThe donkey was pulled to the ground with ropes. No animals were harmed in the movie.
4 years later, but it had to be said.
