It was never explained who he was to her but yes, if they had found her alone elsewhere it would of seemed a little more credible.

Right.. but the colonel explained to Caesar back at his base about some "men taking their family into the woods (deserting the army)," so we should conclude that the girl is family with that man, likely daughter, or some relative...
