think they are aiming for a 'distant future' trilogy..

After seeing Dawn I thought the next film would be another remake of the 'Planet of the Apes' original movie showing the return of the spaceship etc and skipping the earth-human war (like Star Wars PT didn't show Clone Wars). Theyd already showed a big battle at the end of Dawn, so they wouldn't show the war in the next one as it'd be too obvious to do that. Plus the simian flu virus at end of Rise was never shown or had its own movie, (just the end of Rise / opening of Dawn) so Id expect the same with the war. and they've remade Conquest and Battle, the next one was the original (circular chronology) so really if it follows that trajectory Apes 3 should be a remake of the original 68 film (where everything was heading) and then that's it - it ends at the beginning. a trilogy wrapped up TDK style.

but since the next one is titled 'War' I think its a safe bet it'll be what I thought it wouldn't be - another Caesar movie leading on from end of Dawn. so what I now think is that they will go with two trilogies as doing loads of films isn't such a big deal now thanks to the likes of Potter, Marvel and Star Wars... before those it was really just Bond, Star Trek, Police Academy and various horror series that did endless sequels (and of course the original Apes films), theres no reason to wrap everything up in one single trilogy like The Dark Knight (which isn't the way now). also the distant future film(s) are the ones people really want to see and are waiting for and associate most with the POTA brand so those could easily make a billion each if they do 3 films instead of just one film (in fact 'War' might even break a billion)

so itd be six movies, a near future trilogy and a distant future trilogy, each with different characters. :

Near Future Trilogy: (Caesar)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Apes gain intelligence. Humans start dying out. (remake of second half Escape, and Conquest)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Humans and apes are even. The Ape-Human War begins. (remake of Battle)
War of the Planet of the Apes - The Ape-Human War. Apes win. (continues remake of Battle. end credits scene of Icarus)

Distant Future Trilogy: (Taylor)
The Planet of the Apes (as that hasn't been used yet) or Return to the POTA - The astronauts return to find advanced apes over humans. (remake of 1968 Apes although thered be no need to have them think they wernt on earth for the duration of the film - maybe just the opening 10 mins or so until they see the ruined Statue of Liberty. Serkis plays Ceasers descendent possibly Cornelius who teams up with Taylor like the way Roddy McDowell played his own son in Conquest/Battle. Plus they'd be all the original movie characters -Nova, Zira, Zaius, Landon, maybe Brent)
Empire of the Planet of the Apes or Age of the POTA - Humans revolt. The Second Ape-Human War starts. (possible remake of Beneath - the humans could be underground bomb worshipping mutants)
Salvation of the Planet of the Apes or Apocalypse of the POTA - The war ends in either peace or everyone dying in nuclear destruction as the lead characters attempt to escape the planet of the apes. (continues remake of Beneath and also opening of Escape - getting off the planet/possible time travel twists - especially now alternate timelines/realities is in vogue thanks to current Star Trek/XMen/Terminator)

(unless they aiming to do 5 films like the originals in which case lose 'Empire')

I'm with you, I want distant future soonest. I myself am satisfied with the 'present-day' and 'near-future' of this ape series, no more needed. As much as I love Caesar, I think his story is finished. He's done with what he had to do to progress the apes.

I would now like to see the series jump forward into the future beyond the mad max post-apocalyptic look.

Now the series can pick up with the Astronauts return to an unrecognizable world. We were given this Easter Egg in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. (news footage of astronauts lost in space).

And please No mind reading Mutants that make humans fight!

The Icarus on Rise wasn't an easter egg, was a blink for the 1968 movie fans.

By definition, it was an Easter egg.

Plus, it wasn't from the 1968 movie. Taylor's ship left in 1972 and he worked for ANSA. That wasn't the same crew.

i appreciate and respect your opinion, yet you offered me a perspective that i have not considered. However, apes fighting humans... again has also already been accomplished in the 60s-70s franchise along with the present 2 movies as well. Why not continue with original concept. As much of a fan i am of the original series, it would be hard for me to see those characters replaced. I will be critical of keeping the integrity of Bright Eyes (the original), Cornelius etc...

i assumed then mention of Icarus in Rise (or liberty 1) was more than a nod. Guess we'll find out.

Best peek i can find was here: http://screenrant.com/planet-apes-3-trilogy-sequels-andy-serkis/

Almost certainly considering how well the reboot series has worked out so far.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

I don't like the idea of re-treading too much of the original set of films. I like that they've broken away and told their own story, which is the story of Caesar. These films are fairly grounded, well, as grounded as a story of talking apes conquering humanity can be. I really hope we don't get any time travel which was a way to extend the series indefinitely after they wrote themselves into the corner of blowing up the world in Beneath.

That being said, I think this set of films should end whenever Caesar's story is over. I'd be fine with them bridging the new films with the old ones (obviously with an altered origin/timeline for the ape upsrising) Maybe the last movie could end with the humans nuking the planet with the apes taking over afterward. This would explain the Forbidden Zone and the ape's attitude towards man in the original.

I totally agree. The originals are the originals. Just leave them alone and let this new set breathe and grow on its own.

that's possible. maybe they wont want to do the whole astronauts on the planet of the apes thing...they could just do like a last scene or even post credits scene of the Icarus returning to earth and we see a big star like Clooney or whoever as Taylor (or even a CG Heston) come out of the ship..then it ends..the idea being we don't see that version of the astronauts on the planet of the apes as it was done before - three times already (1968/Beneath/Burton) so its left to the viewers imagination (or just go home and watch those movies)..

otherwise wed have to see the astronauts discovering what we the viewer have already seen with Rise, Dawn, War etc.. (then again they could do a fresh spin on it all with timetravel/alt realities as in the OP)

making a remake of the original is the death neil for this franchise the reason this franchise works is because they have avoided remaking the original the original is to special to re do it will kill this franchise when they re do the original

reply

ive noticed in the Dawn commentary/docs Matt reeves referring to the original - like 'this is showing how POTA happened, how we get from here to the 68 film' almost as if to say that the original 68 movie is in continuity with these new films..

reply

they arent though this new franchise will never connect with that film the most we can hope for if you want that is a sequel in the future made in the spirit of that one but they will never re do that story especially not with the more realistic style of these films
