'where people leave their doors unlocked....'

why do these small town crime shows ALWAYS say that nobody locks their doors ... until the murder happens ... who really doesn't lock their doors??! even when you know your neighbors you can't trust that you're safe.

they need to stop saying that all the time it's annoying !

this show is a lot like city confidential... which I like!

Yeah, the 'unlocked door' thing always annoys me, too.

Yes, it is! I've mentioned its similarity as far as the narrator goes--he reminds me of the guy who took over on "City Confidential" after Paul Winfield died. When I'm watching it, I feel a very definite familiarity with it...kind of like "City Confidential, The Sequel." 

I grew up in a town of about 55k and when I was young we didn't lock our doors. As time went by and the late 90s and early 2000s came everyone started to though. My grandparents live in a town of about 500 and I swear to goodness they'll fly across the country to visit family for a week and their doors are left unlocked and the keys to the cars are in their ignitions in the driveway. As insane as it sounds, it's super common in small town America.

Hell I grew up in a town of less than 1500 and we locked our doors all the time. And that was back in the 70's. No way in hell am I leaving my house unlocked even if I'm just going next door or sitting in my own den watching tv.

I can't imagine anyone these days, no matter where you live, would keep their doors unlocked. At night anyways. No place is 100% safe. But I'm sure there are plenty of people that do leave them unlocked because they think nothing will happen in their town. Which is another line in these kind of shows that annoys me - "There was no forced entry so the killer must be someone they knew." Ya cuz the door just couldn't have been left unlocked or anything.

Exactly. I know that I've heard of MANY horrific crimes that have occurred in remote, rural places--and I don't mean just recently, either. I mean from decades ago, some of them are famous...well, infamous. So if that type of crime predates my birth, how is it that people STILL think they're safe with unlocked doors? 

I don't know that people feel they're "safe" with unlocked doors, just that it's their habit to not lock them. They're around the corner or a few steps away and it's not worth the trouble to lock up. Or maybe they plan to be back and carrying in groceries or whatever and don't want to be bothered with having to unlock the door.

I know someone (in a town of 3,000) that never locked her doors until about 10 years ago. She only started then because she'd let some people live with her for a while, and after she kicked them out they had a habit of coming back while she was at work. Her neighbors still don't lock their doors.

Me too. My roommate in college came from a family that never locked their front door in the daytime. And they didn't live in a rural town. They lived in New Jersey! I recall being somewhat horrified when I came over to visit them, to find their front door unlocked. Recall giving them somewhat of a lecture about that which they just laughed off.
Then again, that was a good twenty years ago. Wonder if they still leave their front door unlocked...I remember that to this day. Left an impression on me living in NYC for most of my life.

It seems to be something they say a lot but they must be naive if they're really leaving their doors unlocked. That's crazy! bad things happen everywhere. I do actually know of someone who does leave their door open and I can't understand this way of thinking at all. I always check and double check.
