Guardian: Broadchurch reload Gracepoint got one thing right, ts ending

Totally agree with this assessment (spoilers to both versions):

My least favorite part of Broadchurch was always the ending. Finding out Joe Miller, Ellie’s husband, strangled 11-year-old Danny after the two had been having secret meetings to “hug” just seemed so out of the blue and it was never quite fully explained.

Gracepoint managed to have a much more elegant, meaningful, and open-ended finish.

I liked both versions but the Gracepoint ending was more film noir.

Please don't lecture me. I pointed out at the outset that my post has spoilers. That's why I formatted the post the way I did.

If you saw the original, it was entirely predictable from episode one that they were going to make the son the killer. And far from being elegant it was entirely cack handed. It made Joe far more sympathetic than the pathetic original character and why would you need the original ending fully explained in terms of motivation? The whole point (made by Hardy) was the unknowable nature of the human heart.
