Why did Susan think her son killed Danny?

In Broadchurch, she genuinely thought her son killed Danny because she mistook Joe for him, and they did look alike from a distance, especially with their shaved heads. Yet in Gracepoint, they don't look alike at all, so I don't see how she could have mistaken the two. Did I miss something? Was she just getting back at him for rejecting her?

Think it was Carver who explained it but it was the same build and same height as well as the beanie being on.

And she thought he was like his father, so he 'could' have done it.

This doesn't make sense in the context of Gracepoint. She sees the guy from a distance at night. In Broadchurch both Joe and Nigel (which was the name of her son in that show) are tall thin guys with bald/really close cropped hair. It didn't quite make sense there but it made some more sense that she might mistake the two. In Gracepoint the two guys look nothing alike. Vince is bald and has a stocky build while Joe has a medium build and a full, even bushy, head of hair. It seems unlikely that she'd mistake them.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

Well, he could have worn a beanie and you couldn't tell if a guy was bald.

Maybe Joe and Vince were the same height but I think maybe he could have put new clothes that is big, could make a difference.

This is directly answered in the show, during the scene when Carver tells Ellie about Joe's confession:

Ellie: "But Susan Wright said she saw Vince!"
Carver: "Medium build, medium height, same hat, pulled down low. She thought it was Vince. Maybe she wanted it to be Vince. But it was Joe."
