At the end on the beach when Carver was watching this video of Tom saying 'I never saw anybody ELSE hit him', who did the "else" refer to - else other than whom? I guess now he meant other than himself. But also I was thinking Carver had just realized that meant other than Ellie and Ellie had hit Danny. Maybe she had figured out Tom & Danny's relationship and had lashed out at Danny and hit him.
You are right - it was not mentioned that Ellie hit Danny, and I guess she did not. It had just seemed to me that was Carver's "aha" revelation at the end, implying she was not really as innocent as she seemed either.
I guess he figured out after that "I never SAW anybody ELSE hit him," He practically gave it away that he was also there when the murder happen. Especially since he asks for his shoe size and asks the father his shoe size, I'm assuming he had all the evidence and what not and thought looking back, he just "confessed" to being there. YUP!!! That's what I get from it, so he calls Ellie and she doesn't answer because I guess she doesn't know if they know and figures her husband and her are the only ones that know the "truth" and it'll stay between the two of them. It was an accident that shouldn't of been covered up though.
By the way this was a great show, I haven't seen or heard of the original series until this show came along. Since I've seen Gracepoint, should I watch the original one? Or there's not really a point to it?
My interpretation of the end was that Ellie realized Carver figured it out. She didn't answer her phone because she was about to take her kids and get the hell out of there before Carver comes get her boy.
I watched Broadchurch on Netflix right after Gracepoint and enjoyed the differences and the things that were the same. Not sure why they changed some of the names and not others. Start Broadchurch and see if you like it.
Not buying this Ellie hitting Danny stuff, but I'm with you in general about that scene. What did Carver pick up on watching Tom say that? If it was just Tom basically admitting he hit Danny, well that's a lazy way to get to that ending.
The "anybody else" was Tom basically saying he never saw anyone but himself hit Danny. Obviously Carver didn't know exactly for sure who Tom saw but he knew Ellie had more information than what she told him, and when he finally watched that video and realized that, he called her, but she didn't answer because she knew Carver had found out something but she was trying to protect her kid/family.
I think you are right. Tom saying 'anyone else' was a clue to him never seeing anyone but him hit Danny.
I don't know if Carver was calling to tell Ellie that Tom was the killer or just that Tom had been there. But it wasn't just the way he said anyone else. It was the way the two of them looked at each other that made Carver realize.
Jo
All changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.
That doesn't make any sense. Ellie didn't know anything when that video was shot, so how could Tom hint at Ellie knowing something in that video that Ellie didn't know?
I thought that Carver saw the way how Tom and Joe looked at each other and that was his hint. It basically looked like Tom was looking at Joe to check if he told the story right. This meant that Tom was there and that they were covering this up. Carver didn't notice it until Joe confessed, which was later than the video was recorded.
Carver's question to Tom was after asking him if Paul (the minister) had hit Danny, because Carver knew Tom had threatened Paul that he would say that had happened if Paul handed over the laptop. The only person Carver knew to have hit Danny was Mark (Danny's dad.) In the video, Carver picked up on Tom's odd statement and his glance at his dad. I don't think Carver knew exactly what had happened, just that something wasn't adding up.
Yes, he picked up on the glance--Tom saying "anybody else" while looking at his dad implied there'd been violence between Joe and Danny. Which Tom knew about because he was there. Carver was calling Elly to tell her "Tom knows something; he's involved somehow" -- and maybe to ask her about it. Elly didn't know about the videotaped interview, but she sussed out that Carver was calling about the case and feared he might have guessed the truth. She didn't want to answer because she didn't want him taking Tom in.
