The Message of Gracepoint? *Spoilers*
Forgive me if I seem a bit naive after completing this show, but I felt there were several different opinions of which the writer(s) were trying to express here and none of them I could pinpoint as there direct message (if just one).
There was the accusations of pedophilia because of a known sex offender to only find out that his past was a matter of moral opinion and an a legal issue of weeks. Harassed and vilified by everyone's fear and then to never be protected by the laws or even the ones who knew the truth, he kills himself feeling there's nowhere left he can live.
Susan Wright (trailer lady) explains her past torment with the tale of a husband who continuously sexually abused her older daughter only to turn to the next younger daughter to commit the same crime. Daughter dies (if I remember correctly), husband kills himself while in a cell, and Susan has her family and world fully dismantled without even a warning. Yes, I understand this was a nice set up for Ellie Miller's character. Which brings me to also note Ellie Millers disdain in Susan Wright after not believing that she never knew anything when it was right under her nose (in front of her face, etc).
For the third sex crime of the series we discover Joe Miller has all the while been attracted to young boys, but never acted out on his attractions. This is until he gets close with Danny and begins "relationship" (I use quotes because it's a relative term) by having secret meetings which eventually lead to their last where Joe attempts a physical contact. Here is Danny, at 12 years old we can assume prepubescent, stuck in a cabin with an older man who is confused about his feelings and attractions. Disturbingly so, Joe reaches out to act upon his attractions. Here in lies the only pedophile (by definition) act of the story.
Okay...
1st reveal: Misunderstood and could be forgiven by some and grounds for castration by others.
2nd reveal: Easy to define as a criminal act, one of disgust and even violence - very black and white.
3rd reveal: The crime many consider worse than murder, the evil of all evils. However, even though his intentions were evil there were no evil acts committed. Still, he goes to prison for our sake (audience) because we know he's a pedophile at heart, but we now also know the truth about the now 4th reveal - the death was an accident not even committed by Joe, but by a child as well.
How could all of this happen right in front of Ellie's face? In front of our faces? Are all of these character's stories of sexual abuse, oblivion, persecution, and judicial injustices the messages of this series? Is this the commentary of today's society that the writer(s) is trying to make?
I don't know...I think I just need some help figuring out what really was trying to be said here rather than be told.
Thanks for reading :)
