No award nominations?!

This was ten of the most riveting hours of television that I've watched in ages and, at the very least, Anna Gunn should have seen some sort of recognition (not to mention Jacki Weaver, who was just chilling to watch). They were completely cut out of the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild, though. How terribly wrong!

I think that critics and fans of BC made their feelings known how they did not want a remake, so no matter how good GP turned out to be, there was a cloud hanging over it.

I agree with you and thought it was one of the best shows to come out in a really long time. Exciting, riveting, emotionally gripping, and most likely too dark for American audiences. I am American, but most Americans like their shows clean and tidy and wrapped up in an hour with a happy ending. They immediately turned their attention elsewhere since this involved child murder and was dark and moody and did not have a happy ending.

That is your opinion and nothing else. If you don't think it was dark and moody, then good for you. But my opinion is that it was. I have never seen BC, so i don't know anything about that show.

I don't think that's true. Criminal Minds is dark with children getting killed every few episodes and it's been extremely successful. Gracepoint wasn't advertised well and for some reason it was never "cool" to watch it so it was ignored by awards shows. While I agree it was a good show, its also overshadowed by True Detective, which was much better, IMO. Frankly, I'm surprised it was popular enough to get a full 10 episodes. I don't know anyone else who's even heard of it.

Tons of good to great TV on cable or streaming services, with many of those shows being serialized that tell a complete story over the course of 10-13 episodes. There are even a few quality shows on the networks with The Good Wife and Hannibal.

The Emmy Awards for Breaking Bad would disagree with your assessment of Anna Gunn's acting ability. And i disagree completely - she is totally an incredible actress.

Jackie Weaver's Susan wasn't dim...not at all. So that is another incorrect assessment.

I think she was a fabulously annoying Skyler, but to a degree because she fit perfectly into that role as the strong wife of a weak man. The phone conversation in the last season contains some of the finest acting every shown on tv. This is nothing where being "surrounded by great performances" would automatically have made her look better, rather the opposite. A lack of talent would have been painfully obvious in that scene. So from a technical point of view she did an amazing job there.

That said - she was cast for the wrong role. Had they changed her part instead of making a 1:1 copy, they might have played with her strength. But the character she has to play is so much more vulnerable than she could play, even just from a physical perspective, especially when partnered with a fragile person like Tennant, who made her look huge. The whole under-her-shoe dynamic which made Breaking Bad look so well worked here against the show. So in the end they took her name but did not bother to use her talent. Which should explain the lack of awards.

Agreed. They were the weakest performances in the series.

I don't particularly like her, but Gunn was also good on Deadwood. I would say she is a very competent actress, not amazing though.

reply

It isn't that Gunn is a bad actress...she's a good actress.

Thing is though, even good actors and actresses can be miscast, and, IMO, that's what happened here. IMO, she didn't sell this character.

reply

They didn't deserve it, the ending was crap. Here all these clues for you to figure it out who dunnit but nvm someone is gonna confess.

Lame ending and even the change from Broadchurch doesn't make it better.

Frankly, while I liked the show, I'm not surprised that it failed to get a nomination. IMO, I don't think anyone stood out as having given a great performance, and the show didn't really grab me. If Gunn had gotten a nomination, that would have been undeserving...not as underserving as it would have been if Pena got a nomination, but still.

reply

Broadchurch was so superior to this that it made this series so average.

reply

Really? I haven't seen Gracepoint yet but I thought Broadchurch was pretty average and definitely overrated, going by its score here.

I don't understand why or how this show has been so ignored. The quality is stellar. It should have come out in January or February with the other arty investigatory dramas.
