Detective Sargent John Wadsworth

A police detective of 23 years would not be so easily taken-in by a blackmailer, nor would there be any heat-of-the-moment missteps of murder or rushing into action to try and retrieve the photos, especially when he had the blackmailer "back on his side" without having to spend a penny. 23 years on the force means he would have access to techies who are computer savvy, who could get him her passwords, without him having to divulge his reasons for wanting them. 23 years as a detective, with a boss who is somewhat of a friend, means he could tell his boss about the details of the blackmailing, in confidence, insisting he would like to resolve the situation without "kicking the hornets nest." The very worse case scenario is she sends out the pictures as promised, but by then he has recorded her admitting to drugging and blackmailing him, and all recipients of the pictures would know they had been staged.
And to top it all off, the pictures were comical anyway. If they were of the pedophilia nature, or if they contained other adults "performing" with him, then that would be trouble.

Agreed.

I also thought...

SPOILER AHEAD

...that him landing on a car windscreen from only ten feet above would not have killed him. Catherine even told him he would not die even if he landed on the road, so as the car broke his fall, his injuries would not be that bad. Most likely only several broken bones.

This is true. I'm not convinced he died. Was there a scene that proves he did? I don't remember it. I need to go back and check.

Superb points you make here, and they do point to some implausibility in the story. It makes me wonder if the reason John didn't do all of these things to cover his tracks is just his plain old arrogance cleverly disguised in his sheepish man suit. He felt too confident he could tie Vicky's murder to the serial killer and didn't even consider Plan B if his Plan A didn't work out.
