Catherine felt pangs of guilt because Kirsten was in the midst of a major emotional crisis ("This is the only thing I've ever wanted and I'm **** at it"), and, as she said the next day, she SHOULD have said, "You're not a bad cop at all. You're a good cop. Give it time" -- and instead she just ignored / dismissed her, so she knew the last thing Kirsten ever heard her say was something mean.
Kirsten idolized Catherine and looked up to her as a mentor, so yeah, having probably your favorite person in the whole world refuse to give you an inch, and bawl you out after a stressful day at work, without even offering any worlds of reassurance after Kirsten admits how lost she feels -- sucks.
Kirsten's widowed husband was focused on the fact that the last night Kirsten was alive, she spent unhappy and in tears. Naturally, he'd be angry.
Did all of them overreact? Yeah.
Have you ever lost someone unexpectedly? I hope not. It's crap. You do exactly what two of these three people did -- you relive your last encounter (I hope to God you have no reason to regret it) and feel like crap if it wasn't in any way loving, because you have zero chances to make it right.
Not the last thing, they were joking about farmers and their sheep the next day. She just never would have taken the tough love route if she had any idea what was about to come.
I think it's significant that her dead daughter made a couple appearances after the death of Kirsten. She was clearly conflicted. The "tough love" pep talk geared to make her a better cop probably resulted in her death. But Moms do have such talks with their children (or should) to make them better people and, ultimately, independent human beings. She was acting very much like a Mom when she told her, "I'm not your mother." I think she did see her as a bit of a surrogate daughter. KatherineFantastic is right about people overreacting when they lose someone unexpectedly. That is how life is. When young people die, it's almost always unexpected.People have regrets. I suppose that is the feature of this program that hits close to home for so many of us.
I thought the same thing as her partner (before that was shown) when it happened. I said to my bf 'the thing is, she would have probably waited for back up if Catherine hadn't told her she needed to let them know who is boss.' Catherine wasn't to know but it's very likely that Kirsten did what she did because of that pep talk. Just tragic really.
