Vicky's Photos

Were they so very bad of John? From a Brit living in America for decades, they didn't seem so bad to me. Were they so bad that they led to John's terrible acts? Would they really have ended his career?

reply

I was thinking the same thing. He should have told his wife and showed his boss the pictures and got Vicky for blackmail. This show really plays the bad guy to think they are an an innocent victim that things happen to rather than them taking responsibility.

This was always the only flaw for me in an otherwise superb TV series. They were pretty tame pics and I can't believe they would have ended his career, or relationships with anyone. He could have explained them by saying they were taken on a stag do, perhaps?

reply

Exactly. He would have been the butt of jokes for some time, but people quickly forget. It's not like she posted them to the dailymail.com site.

What you have to remember is that everyone would react differently to that situation. Not everyone would view those photos in the same way you do and John clearly didn't. For him, they really were that bad. John felt his best option at the time was to get rid of her. It was a crime of passion.

He would have been humiliated and probably divorced. If they were sufficiently distributed they could have had a bad effect on his employment as well. Local perps would think he was a joke.

I also found it unrealistic, at least not relatable. Also thought about explaining it as a stag do when I saw the scene. But then again, it always seems crazy to me how people can be preoccupied with 'keeping up appearances'. Maybe it's not a flaw in the storytelling but a lack in my imagination and empathy.

Also after studying the scene again you see some lines of cokes, and although I'm pretty sure there's a lot of cops using all kinds of drugs, but sanctimonious as they are, it's definitely grounds for firing if they find out, maybe even just being at a party where people are openly doing that.

What is a bit paradoxical (I'm sure purposely written) is that he was likely concerned more about his domestic life than professional. Dump Vicky and keep his marriage and family. Unfortunately he walked in on the wife and her lover a bit too late. Timing is everything. That's what my surgeon friend told me after he got a skanky nurse pregnant the week before his vasectomy.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

reply

Didn't think about that but you're right, if he would have discovered his wife's affair first he probably would have just left and would have been unblackmailable! Nice irony.

reply

Micirisi- sounds to me like your doctor friend was the skank.

The pictures were fairly tame comparatively speaking, but I think the problem was they called into doubt John's carefully crafted loving and doting husband and father/pillar of the community/law enforcement good guy persona. John's image in others' eyes was all that mattered.

By the way, I thought Season 2's story line with John and Vicky was the best one.
