My guess is that the monster is only in the boy's mind. It's his way to deal all his troubles.

shareIt's is and it isn't. It's a fantasy movie. The monster is real, but at the same time the boy is the only one who can see him. It's almost as if the tree comes alive to help those who need it.
In the book, however, I don't think it was in the school. At least not flinging tables and chairs around like a tree on steroids.
