Is this an "all in his head" kind of movies?

It looks good but I'd be kind of disappointed if it's just another, all in his imagination type movies and no one else can see it. I'll see it either way but just curious. The whole, kid has active imagination he uses to cope with real life type deal has been done to death. Would like to see one where the fantasy is a part of the reality for a change.

After seeing the trailer, conceptually it looks to me very similar to Pan's Labyrinth.

Did you read the book??

Is that a yes or a no, 404?

SPOILER (book version):

The giant is the boy's way of coping with the losing of his mom. It's in his head, at least in the book verison.

Thanks. That's what I figured. Movie will probably be the same. Not that it's a bad thing, just was kind of hoping for it to be real. I got a pans labyrinth vibe too... Pans labyrinth at least left it to the viewer whether or not it was all in her head or not as you could really argue it both ways...

I haven't read the book yet, but I read one of the first drafts of the script and the vibe I got was that it could be either or as well. Maybe the book makes it more obvious, but it appears as though the "monster" leaves actual physical evidence behind when he visits Connor..although I suppose that could be in his head as well. I wouldn't write it off quite yet. I interpreted it as the monster being a mystical type creature that comes alive when someone needs him or "calls" him, but is only visible to the person in need. The book is classified as a fantasy book, so I'm assuming it's suppose to be up to the reader. It was a while though since I read the script, so I might be forgetting something. Either way, it looks amazing! I definitely plan on reading the book now.

I just finished reading the book and there are some details that make me think that the author meant for the question of whether the monster is real or not to be left ambiguous. Namely, after each of the monster's visits Conor finds something in his room the next morning like a pile of leaves, his bedroom floor covered in berries or a tree sapling growing out of his floor that he has to saw off to remove it. So make of that what you will.

"Do you know what the Preservation Room is for?"
"Delicious jams and jellies?"
