Doing horrible at box office

While did good in Spain, here in the U.S, this film is doing sooo bad. Not even a million yet. Seriously? This movie should be seen by everyone! How unfortunate:/

Yeah it saddens me.

Lose the Game!!!!!!!

Sadly not a surprise. Lack of a clear advertising campaign and audience to target has really hurt it.

reply

Sucks because it's a great movie. Besides the lack of advertising, I think the problem is that this is just a hard movie to sell people on.

reply

Terrible title also. Sounds like a c-grade horror movie

Loved the movie but I agree Focus should've marketed the movie better, especially after pushing it back two months. I even mentioned that on their social media sites.

I swear, anytime a movie is pushed back it almost always bombs. Originally A Monster Calls was supposed to come out last October, but for whatever reason they pushed it back to January. I think it had to do with them hoping it would be in the running for award season, but October would have had far less competition.

I also agree that a lot of it probably has to do with the nature of the film as well. It's been getting stellar reviews from critics and audiences a like, so it's not that it isn't a good film, it's just that it is such a sensitive topic. Plus, it is kind of marketed as a kid's or family film, and a lot of parents might think it's too dark for a kid. Combine all of that with the fact that it was released less than a month after a Star Wars film is never a good idea.

Honestly though, if the biggest complaint so far is that it is too dark or too sad then that's not a bad sign, so it's a shame that so many people are choosing not to see it. They're missing out. J.A Bayona is shaping up to be one of the best directors, dare I say it, of all time. 3 for 3 is not a bad start. I can't wait to see what he's going to do with Jurassic World 2. He clearly knows how to make the most out of a budget and definitely understands how to capture emotion, so I'm excited to see his career progress.

Yeah I think too that giving it a limited release was a mistake considering it's also competing against Live By Night, Patriots Day, and Silence in the indie market.

reply

I think they pushed it back from October release so people wouldn't think it was a horror movie.

reply

I just saw it. I was the only person in the theater. Granted it was a late showing on a Sunday night but still. Great film though.

The film is bombing (very badly) in the U.S. because American audiences think it's just THE BFG with a Groot rip-off instead of a giant old man.
