shareYeah it saddens me.
Lose the Game!!!!!!!
Sadly not a surprise. Lack of a clear advertising campaign and audience to target has really hurt it.
shareSucks because it's a great movie. Besides the lack of advertising, I think the problem is that this is just a hard movie to sell people on.
shareI swear, anytime a movie is pushed back it almost always bombs. Originally A Monster Calls was supposed to come out last October, but for whatever reason they pushed it back to January. I think it had to do with them hoping it would be in the running for award season, but October would have had far less competition.
I also agree that a lot of it probably has to do with the nature of the film as well. It's been getting stellar reviews from critics and audiences a like, so it's not that it isn't a good film, it's just that it is such a sensitive topic. Plus, it is kind of marketed as a kid's or family film, and a lot of parents might think it's too dark for a kid. Combine all of that with the fact that it was released less than a month after a Star Wars film is never a good idea.
Honestly though, if the biggest complaint so far is that it is too dark or too sad then that's not a bad sign, so it's a shame that so many people are choosing not to see it. They're missing out. J.A Bayona is shaping up to be one of the best directors, dare I say it, of all time. 3 for 3 is not a bad start. I can't wait to see what he's going to do with Jurassic World 2. He clearly knows how to make the most out of a budget and definitely understands how to capture emotion, so I'm excited to see his career progress.
Yeah I think too that giving it a limited release was a mistake considering it's also competing against Live By Night, Patriots Day, and Silence in the indie market.
shareI think they pushed it back from October release so people wouldn't think it was a horror movie.
shareI just saw it. I was the only person in the theater. Granted it was a late showing on a Sunday night but still. Great film though.
shareThe film is bombing (very badly) in the U.S. because American audiences think it's just THE BFG with a Groot rip-off instead of a giant old man.
Send her to the snakes!
