The Neverending Story is pretty close, with bullies and the death of a mother, although the latter happened before the story. This movie felt similar, thematically.

I would recommend Paperhouse (1998), which is similar to this movie but much darker in tone.

None, this kind of depresing *beep* "there is not happy ending because that's life" its something that came after 2000...
