Can someone explain? Spoilers
What's the connection between the monster and boy's mother? Did she made him up? I didn't get the scene when she and the monster were looking at each other.

shareMy understanding, such as it is, is that the Monster came to her when her father died (it was briefly mentioned) and when she was dying she (somehow, I don't quite know how, I'm sure a better mind than mine can explain!) managed to summon the Monster to guide her son through her own death, hence the pictures he found at the end.
In my silly opinion, anyway.
Not silly at all.
shareThat's what I was thinking as well. Or the Monster just appears to help people (especially children) through grief. I don't think the mother made up the monster.
shareThe reason why the grandmother didn't punish the boy for destroying her home is because she had seen the behavior before in her own daughter, when her father died. Very powerful movie.
shareShe called the monster.
My take on it is her father told her those stories and she made the monster up when he died. Maybe she told her son the stories when he was younger and he was just remembering them through dreams and imagination. In the first story the monster just coaxes him into imagining the landscape.
