Sigourney Weaver cannot do a British accent

Some actors just cannot do accents from countries different from their own, because their own native accent will always come through. Weaver is one of them. 

Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?

I'm an American who has never gone to England so I'm no expert. Plus Sigourney Weaver's mother was supposedly British and I'm sure she's traveled there for family or vacation or work reasons multiple times.

Now with all that being said, I did think Weaver's English accent was weak.

I COULD and probably AM completely wrong but that's just how it sounded to my UNTRAINED ears.

I'm English and at no point did I think her accent was bad. I wasn't actively listened to it, but to be honest if it was a really poor attempt at an English accent from an American I probably would have noticed so it couldn't have been that bad

reply

I guess I wasn't being fair about her attempts at the accent, because I know how she normally sounds from so many other movies. She did try, I have to admit. Very commendable.

I'm English and I she had a very good accent, maybe one or two slight Americanisms but it didn't bother me too much to diss it.

Suuuuuuuuure you would have.

A. It was indeed bad. Dreadful, actually.
B. Clearly, you didn't notice it.
C. Your declaration speaks volumes about you.

I didn't concentrate on the accent too closely. What did you think of the performance though, at times I thought it was very powerful.

I thought she was American, I got confused due to that. I thought the Dad was going to be her son as he lived in the US. She also didn't seem old enough to have all the " Old Lady " stuff in her house. She seemed too well put together for all the tacky bits of ornaments.

I thought the same 😏

It is interesting to see this thread already here, as I was about to ask the same question. I wrote my review of the film the night I saw it and devoted an entire paragraph to how weak and uneven Weaver's attempt at the accent was. Logically,, her accent should match that of her daughter in many aspects as she raised her and they lived in the same region. Weaver spoke with a barely detectable accent that faltered between sentences and even within sentences. She always speaks with a clenched jaw, whic does not help here as the lower jaw should be thrust forward slightly for some upper class accents.

I have spent time in many parts of England and have never run into whatever accent she is attempting. The boy is Scottish and he does a flawless English accent.

(Have I used the word "accent" enough?)

Nowhere in the movie can we see Sigourney her passport or her nationality. So who says she is British ?

She is maybe Polish and moved to the U.K when she was 13, for all we know!

reply

Exactly, the film does not mention her nationality. Perhaps she is American, married a British guy and moved to the UK. Who knows?

I wondered briefly about her accent, but then dismissed it, because there could be tons of explanations for this.

She tried and it wasn't an appalling attempt but she spoke too slowly and it didn't sound natural. I think if she practiced more she could have nailed it. Her acting was really good and she was a supporting character so I didn't mind.
