Boring, forgettable and lame

The production company behind this movie is going to make it a hit like it did with "Regression" by Alejandro Amenábar investing a lot of money in advertisements and media coverage, but "A monster calls" is a waste of time.

What a boring, forgettable and lame movie! People behind this movie may think that cancer + children = beautiful story, but what on Earth? This movie has no soul, has no depth.

Dull.

Couldn't agree with you more. The effects were good though. The story is predictable and nothing new. Just watch the trailer and you'll be able to guess pretty much the whole film.

reply

We must have been watching different films. I thought it was very well made and not predictable at all.

reply

It was very well made, it had some great FX and animations... but that's all.

Wasn't it predictable? A child with a dying mother who ends up dying, you can't say you didn't see it coming.

Not to mention a monster that appears in the child's imagination and tells him: "I'm going to tell you 3 stories", and then the audience can watch and listen to these 3 stories while waiting for the next one and see if something really happens in the whole movie.

Nothing moved me about this movie. Sorry.

I totally agree with this thread: the film was surprisingly tame. I didn't feel the connection between mom & son, so how can we care about them if there's no development in this sense? I don't think they both shared more than 10 minutes together in the whole movie.
The story is beautiful and the effects are stunning but that's it.

The movie is a waste of time, but it has been a success in Spain thanks to the fact the distributor of the film bombarded all the media with advertising!

When Spanish directors make movies with Spanish money, everybody in Spain goes crazy and think these should be considered the movie of the year.

It's a shame, because there are other Spanish directors doing great movies like Jaume Collet-Serra, but he chose to move to the US instead of taking advantage of his nationality (and Spanish money).

reply

If you "didn't feel the connection between mom & son" you must have walked out before the very last scene. There's an extremely important connection between the two revealed in the final moments.

A kid wishing his mother to just die is everything but predictable. It's the twist that makes this movie so different from the caricature you think you saw.
How much depth is there in the charachter of the kid, or the mother?

And you aren't watching goodfellas.. some movies build up, which is the case here.

reply

If you think that's the twist of the movie or that's what it makes it interesting, good for you.

I was bored from beginning to end.

The people I went to watch the movie with didn't feel like me, but they also thought it was lame and there was a lack of connection between the mother/child's drama and the fantasy of the film. They didn't like it either.

The truth lies in the eye of the beholder.

reply

I think your opinion is very clear. as is the opinion of critics.

reply

What were you expecting going into the movie then?

reply

What was it you didn't like about it? Did it not have enough "pep" "sass" or Kardashians for you?

Pound to a penny you're probably some obnoxious yank with a spoilt brat attitude to everything in life.

I feel sorry for you really. It must be an awful way to exist.

reply

No way. I lost a parent when I was this kid's age and I was surprised at the maturity this movie showed. This kid is not only being yanked into adulthood in the very worst way possible but he is also a volcano of anger and sadness building up inside and Bayona creates visuals here that not only show that nightmare perfectly but he also never manipulates that whole cancer thing for easy tears. This isn't just another cancer movie, even in the narration that starts the film, it says its about a boy who is more than a boy but not yet ready to be a man. It's also about storytelling and how that can inform and educate us for adulthood, something i've also come to realize through my life as well.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

This was only a success in Spain, because there was a huge investment in the movie and it was announced everywhere, but that's all.

The film bored me to death. In a couple of years nobody will remember it.

reply

Yawn. Trolls really have gotten stale these tales
