Sadly it’s pretty common.

The cartels are notoriously creative when it comes to killing people. They don't just view murder as an unpleasant but necessary task. Some actual cartel methods I have heard of include the acid vats as seen in this movie, cutting people up and hanging the parts near a busy road as seen in this movie, the "barbecue", which involves putting people in a drum of gasoline and lighting it on fire. Recently I saw real video of a man and a boy who had dynamite tied around their necks and detonated. Another time, cartel members hijacked an intercity bus full of people and forced them to fight each other to the death with household tools in gladiatorial matches.
