Alejandro was once a Mexican Police Officer

Throughout the film, I kept wondering why there were scenes showing the corrupt Mexican cop Silvio's family. Why bother building sympathy for such an insignificant character?

Then it hit me: Alejandro was once a Mexican police officer, too. Unlike Silvio, however, Alejandro refused to do the Cartel's bidding. They murdered his family as punishment.

Alarcon alludes to this right before Alejandro kills him: "Your wife, you think she'd be proud of what you've become?" Alejandro was once a good cop who tried to do right.

EDIT: Annnd I'm wrong. Alejandro was a prosecutor.

Wasn't he a prosecutor?

That was made clear in the film.

Javier from Traffic.

My guess is he'd been a Medellín cartel sicario before he started working as a prosecutor.

I've a feeling they'll be developing his character a lot in the sequel (prequel?).

Didn't he say he was born in Colombia?

He wasn't a prosecutor for real. He meant it in a metaphoric way. He was gonna bring justice/revenge to some Mexican cartel.

Alejandro is a Colombian Cartel who's family got killed by the Mexican Cartel.

Hence why they say Medellin. referencing their old boss who lost the Mexican territory the Colombians used to run during Pablo Escobar days.
