Denis Villeneuve's least interesting movie, thematically

First off, I enjoyed this movie. It has a lot of hallmarks of his style, especially the sense of menace that he is capable of achieving, especially in the way his shots work with the soundtrack. Secondly, I don't mean to suggest the movie lacks a "message" or anything worth being talked about or discussed.

But having now seen all his films, while this isn't my least favorite, I do think it is, at least in some respects, the most accessible or at least the most "obvious" about its themes. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. I just feel like, although it's a good film, it lacks a certain depth that all his other films have, even "Arrival" which in certain other respects I would call his most "mainstream" movie.

Some may disagree, but I'm just putting it out there.

Interesting. While I don't disagree with your assertion in whole, I must say that was was at least entertained by Sicario. Whereas with Arrival, it couldn't end fast enough. I was thoroughly bored and the ending left me feeling ripped off. I was perplexed that the same director made both movies.

Interesting. I loved Arrival, even if the ending felt a little "sappy" compared to what I usually like to see in film, but for me it still worked. It definitely had a lot of the same cinematic hallmarks of Villeneuve's style though. I like that he isn't always exploring the same themes or otherwise retreading ground.

The depth is also my problem with Sicario. This maybe isn't the films depth as to the real life situation that isn't present in the script.
Like you I really like this film. My problem comes from the knowledge that the circle of drug business is more complex. Buy this i mean the multiple parties that are involved and support it's existence. Mainly the US side 'cause we know that the Latino American governments are into it. But the US still makes it as if they aren't.
