Let's be honest...

After 2000 years...this is NOT the guy she would choose.
He's a needy, not incredibly attractive, dork whose really not all that smart who keeps pressing and prodding her to fall in love with him.
He is not charming, and she could do WAY better.

You can tell this movie was written by "bro's."
Classic line of profound bro dialogue, when he is expressing the deep yearnings of his bro soul:

"I'm gonna miss the h*ll out of you. Like it's gonna *beep* hurt...bad."

Wow...that is some beautiful prose. How romantic!

Plus...they'll probably get divorced in like 4 years, and she'll be PISSED!

A detail that most "She's-Way-Out-His-League" posts overlook is that Evan is studying at the *University of California Berkeley* when he withdraws to care for his dying mother. (UCB is one of the most prestigious and academically competitive public universities in the county) And while he doesn't talk like a Fulbright Scholar, he's fit, streetwise (in a quiet way), reasonably cute, and a very good listener. Remember too that Louise *picks him*, as the best of three available walking through the "Piazza", when her biological clock says "Mate, NOW"

Love is a funny thing - the "oxytocin moment" is all about timing. It was "touch and go" until the final scene: Sunrise in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius. She starts to "molt", off-camera, and he, risking his life, says:

"Love comes around a couple times if you're lucky. Life probably seems short, no matter what"

At that instant Louise, like her mother two thousand years earlier, renounces immortality for true love thereby breaking her 20-year Rebirth Cycle; as the volcano erupts in the background providing a fitting bookend to the story.

Definitely a Shrek ending:
"By night one way, by day another / Thus shall be the norm / Till you receive true love's kiss / then, take love's true form."

Cheers!

True.

Btw in an hilarious short on the DVD they give an alternate ending where he's talking on the phone with his Bro in the U.S. nine months later. She's given birth to a monster, and gotten fat, so he's out cruising chicks again. The directors are really funny guys, and the extra features are really funny.

It would be hard to give up immortality for him but let's be honest, after 2000 years, maybe she was ready to call it quits. Some people might consider it a curse to live forever.
