Good Film But Was the Politicking Too Blatant?

It seems every film today has to make an egregious political point, and the constant references to Nixon's election seemed to be this film's.

My issue with it, is that it was tied to the Vietnam War, and one character being drafted, but my understanding is that BOTH parties, including the DNC (which was, of course, the one that put the US in Vietnam to begin with) were effectively standing on a pro-Vietnam War platform (although of course that would have been different had Eugene McCarthy won the DNC nomination over Hubert Humphrey). I know some people have speculated in hindsight that the GOP/Nixon scuppered DNC plans for peace with North Vietnam, but at the time, did anyone believe either party was different on this issue, especially since the DNC was the party that initiated the damn war?
